an evening with Philippa Lewis introducing her book

Everyman’s Castle
“With her breadth of reference and sprightly style she shows how the British psyche can be read through our buildings” Michael Prodger, The Guardian

For twenty years Philippa Lewis photographed all aspects of British building – from sheds to palaces, tiny ornamental details to great facades, the everyday and inconsequential as well as the grand and important.

Everyman’s Castle is as much about social attitudes as a history of domestic architecture in Britain. Philippa draws on a wide range of sources for text and illustrations: letters, novels, diaries, magazines, advertisements, cartoons and chocolate boxes – to uncover the dreams and pretentions which have shaped British homes.

“Every word of this (final) chapter … made me want to live in a bungalow: above all in a prefab” – AN Wilson, The Telegraph
